And we figured that expressing our thoughts was a touchy-feely activity.
Wrong!
Excellent writing requires pressing in, hammering away, and sweating it out.
It means digging down until you find that elusive kernel of truth that causes awareness to dawn and all the other details to fall into place. You must probe, persuade, and persevere—and do so creatively and concisely.
Then make it all look easy.
Craftsmanship.
Creative Writing? or Copywriting?
Creative writing, also called original writing, is exactly what it says: the writer locates and absorbs as much information as possible about a subject then processes that information to produce creative copy.
- the writer's intents and perspectives in their own words and style
Copywriting is similar; the distinction is that someone else (the client) sets the goals and purposes of the project and provides the materials and support information to be used in the writing process. Same creativity. Same craftsmanship. Unique perspective.
- the client's intents and perspectives in the words and style of the writer
A third writing rubric is Ghostwriting. Someone else (the “author”) sets the goals and purposes of the project; provides the support information (often a first draft); and, with the advice of the writer, establishes the writing style, vocabulary, and ‘voice’ of the piece. The ghostwriter harnesses all those distinct pieces and makes them work together.
- the client's intents, perspectives, vocabulary, and style
–the craftsmanship of the writer

The fictional device was used in writing The Germ that Causes Cancer. To communicate the complex issues encompassing cancer research we created 3- to 4-paragraph short stories that encapsulated the heart of a chapter and placed them on the left-hand page, opposite the beginning of their respective chapters. For the less technically-minded reader, it offered a little ‘down time’ and an opportunity for the information to ‘sink in.’
