Yes, you’re right. Everything I do is technically considered “prepress”—except printing the desktop publishing assignments. And that’s the distinction between my desktop publishing work and my “prepress publishing” work: who does the actual printing.
When you have a big job to do
If you have the copywriter, the graphic designer, the digital files preparer, and the printer all on staff or under contract, you don’t have to worry about locating people for all those phases of a job. But when your staff’s not that big or you want to simplify the process:

- Copywriting and design decisions ~
- Work with you to refine your message and develop the best way to present it to your audience.
- Provide copywriting and a selection of layout designs so you can choose what works best for you.
- If you have a graphic designer, I will be happy to work with them. Please note: I am not a graphic designer. I am a writer with years of design experience who is willing to learn more.
- Layout the complete piece, cover to cover, which can include
- front matter: title page, imprint page, copyright page, table of contents, dedication, author's notes, prologue, foreword, or other pages appropriate to your work;
- accuracy in page numbering, section titles and numbering, call outs, sidebar excerpts, or support data;
- back matter: appendices, bibliography, notes pages, index, or other as appropriate to your work.
- Please note that indexing is done only as part of a larger work. I am not an independent indexer.
- Incorporate your graphics and images or provide some for your project.
- Finalize the project and submit for your approval.
- Prepare the files and digital prepress information for submission to your printer.
- Proof, including color separations, to verify end product meets project objectives and accuracy standards.
- Submit for your final approval.
