Interesting Reads & Beautiful Books
A Whack on the Side of the Head by Roger von Oech, Ph.D.—and check out his Blog. His tag line is quite appropriate: “Fun Ideas to Stimulate Your Creativity.”
For anyone who wants to understand a little more about the United States in the twentieth century: Capture the Moment: The Pulitzer Prize Photographs, edited by Cyma Rubin and Eric Newton (The Freedom Forum Newseum, 2003).
The book is based on the Capture the Moment: The Pulitzer Prize Photographs museum exhibit. By the time we were a quarter of the way through the exhibit, the people around me had lowered their voices to a whisper. At the half-way point, hardly any one said a word. By the end, most of the people around me were wiping away tears. If you can not see the exhibit in person, spend time with the book (available at amazon.com).
National Geographic Magazine: 100 Best Pictures (National Geographic Society, 2001) helps us see our world the way Capture the Moment helped us see the United States.
Love is the Killer App: How To Win Business And Influence Friends by Tim Sanders, Leadership Coach at Yahoo!
Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss, published by Gotham Books. Ms. Truss subtitles her work, The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation and states, “So, punctuation really does matter, even if it is only occasionally a matter of life and death.”
Writing, Editing, & Grammar Resources
Strunk and White's excellent primer Elements of Style on bartleby.com. While there, check out their resources for quotations and citation information.
Some interesting tidbits related to Professor Strunk and E. B. White's Elements of Style:
- In October 2005, children's book illustrator Maira Kalman debuted her illustrations and a contemporary opera based on Professor Strunk's humorous illustrations of his grammar rules. Ms Kalman had enlisted the music composition talents of Julliard-trained Nico Muhly. Their visual and musical depiction of Elements of Style was performed at the New York Public Library. You can see and hear excerpts from their work on the National Public Radio Web site.
- E. B. White also penned the children's classics Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little, and The Trumpet of the Swan. He wrote them as tales he could read to his own nieces and nephews. (see “Meet the Author” at Houghton Mifflin Reading.
- Professor Strunk used the metaphor of “a man floundering in a swamp” to illustrate a reader struggling to decipher “poorly written English.” His picture is incorporated into the White Paper Excellence in Written Communication: The Benefits of Draining the Corporate Swamp.
